Now how did that happen?

Three weeks ago a friend came to visit and asked to look through my collection. Not the shiny stuff in the cabinets but those old boxes in the garage I hadn't opened in 20 to 30 years. As part of that process We discovered a HUGE quantity of WWII 6mm items that I had completely forgotten about. It was painted in my early enthusiasm for gaming with little skill, little concern for colour detail and using Humbrol enamels. They are truly bad but there are lots of them. My pal as is his style went into super enthusiastic style and managed to whet my interest too.

"Lets play Rommel" he said.

I managed to contain him at that precise moment but the damage was done. my old dusty warriors "shall go to the ball"  After he had gone reality kicked in and I started on pros and cons. The only pro was there were lots of them. The cons were multitude including the paint jobs that I found so offensive now.  This needed careful thought because no way was I going to clean all that old paint off and repaint them. In the end I left them on the table top in the garage to give this my full consideration.

First I read the rulebook and was immediately taken with the number of innovative mechanisms I could already see. Divisional level games with large bases in almost board game style. I was hooked. Next I did my usual trick of skimming the forums for other peoples ideas and techniques. While doing so I discovered some beautiful playing pieces which were basically mini dioramas, beautifully presented and executed. thats the way to do it. . Suddenly I knew what I must do I would hide my tatty figures among some decent scenic dioramas. A quick peruse of the internet found me a cheap but very recommended static grass applicator THIS ONE and a fresh supply of static grass of various lengths and colours. The butterfly had struck again.

I started work about two weeks ago and the applicator arrived just after. I cannot for the life of me understand why I didn't buy one before. I made some trial tufts and they are brilliant. Next step was some bases. The results have delighted me and my old figures are about to live again. Here are some examples.

They may not be exactly a silk purse from a sows ear but they will do for me considering where I started from. So there you have it. WWII in Western Europe, how it happpened and why it happened. It came as quite a surprise to me because it hadn't even crossed my mind before that fatefull day in my garage. I'm sure it's just a phase and that normal service will resume ASAP. Till then it's all "send three and fourpence we are going to a dance".
